The best way to customize a website is having the key knowledge of web development, you have to have an idea and go head on with it. Never quit, and learn how to dodge big messes in the long run.
Knowing your key factors of CSS, HTML, and javascript for a static website, now if you want a CMS based website you will also need to know PHP and mySQL. Knowledge is key!

Easiest is punBB, why? There are plenty of reasons why, such as more selectors and more ways to style it. phpbb2 it's foundation is all tables, and then well not very easy to style the entire site, and it has less selectors.

So if I take web development course I will learn css, html, javascript, php, mysql etc? Will all that be covered in web development?

Oh that is what you are asking which courses to take? To be honest for good web designer takes good courses lol. Web Development and Web Design are sort of different.

    Web Designer

Web design is the customer-facing part of the website. A web designer is concerned with how a site looks and how the customers interact with it. Good web designers know how to put together the principles of design to create a site that looks great. They also understand about usability and how to create a site that customers want to navigate around in because it’s so easy to do.

    Web Development

Web development is the back-end of the website, the programming and interactions on the pages. A web developer focuses on how a site works and how the customers get things done on it. Good web developers know how to program CGI and scripts like PHP. They understand about how web forms work and can keep a site running effectively.

Yeah a lot of people think Web Development and Web Designing is the same thing but its not. You explained it well Easy. I've heard of people thinking is was all about "Computers" too, they thought if your good on a computer it must mean you're a good website designer and developer. Wrong, the two are apples and oranges. As an example I have a friend that is great on a computer, can do just about anything that has to do with the programing of one, but he doesn't know jack about building a website.

I started building websites 12 years ago, not forums websites. I started with a blank HTML box, no template no nothing. I didn't know what to do at all with it so I started my long journey of learning HTML first at help sites, and a lot of googling what I didn't know. Its a never ending learning process.

Yup same here, I started 12 years ago as well Smile I started off with Yahoo Sitebuilder, at first constricted to the WYSIWYG part of it, then learning that there was code behind it all. Yes back then Yahoo Site Builder was so easy to design a great website just with the WYSIWYG editor, but I wanted more control and learned that I could do the programming levels on my own. So I slowly started off, learning from watching tutorial videos, picking up three big old books (probably 7-10 pounds each) and flipped through all those pages.
Now I remind you I was 11 then, only thinking that all websites were built from clicking and dragging elements. Once I was 12 I was off to basic HTML, building entire websites from scratch. Then as time went on I drifted off to another world, then a few years later came back to the designing aspect. Started relearning html, then learning CSS, oh and then recently started learning Javascript.

Backend developers and Front End Designers usually know about each programming codes, usually a Backend does not NOT know of Front End Designs. They are hand and hand, just each specializes and knows more of their career choice and so that is why the Call themselves Designers and Developers.

Yeah, I think anyone that wants to learn how to build websites should start with learning basic HTML, then go from there.

You were 11 years old, wow. When I was 11 I was chasing girls around the neighborhood on my bike..lol

Nope not me. I went to a private school, beat kids up, did drugs and alcohol. Only way I could stay calm and focused was website designing. Haha well much hasn't changed I suppose, besides the drug and alcohol I'm clean now lmao. I still drink here and there though

Hmmm, I never pegged you for the party type or a bully, I see you as "Simon the bird" kinda guy, nerdy and shy around girls..lmao

    Mr.EasyBB
Nope, it's actually opposite what people say. They usually say " I never pictured you as an intelectual , or a nerd." I used to be the kind of guy who people were actually afraid of me. And never shy around girls. I used to be a hardcore person, dressed in all black, beating up people and teachers. No life direction and lost. (I suffer from Bipolar Type 2 with psychosis) and well web designing and developing is my key to calm. As well as my books I write, i have one with 300 poems. Then two others which are novels, The Zombi Chronicles, and my other novel Sadistic. Almost complete though designing has been taking alot of my time up lately so.

Well I'm glad you found web designing something that gives you direction and peace.

I grew pretty normally I guess no issues to speak of, I too went to a private school for 2 years (5 and 6 grade) because my parents wanted me to have a better education than what the public schools were providing at that time, but eventually I went back to public schools where I graduated from high-school.

My life growing up as a young boy was mostly spent on a horse ranch in the afternoons with my horse my parents bought me for my birthday. It was a big ranch with many other people that owned horses too, it was a Ranch for boarding your horses. I wasn't sent there I wanted to go there and ride my horse and spend the day there, in the evening I would come home, and the next morning my parents would drive me back to the ranch to spend the day. I was lucky in that I had something like that, the ranch was on 1300 acres of wooded land with lakes and streams and we had cattle too. I use to show horses in competitions and also use to calf rope in rodeo type events. It was a great environment to grow up in.

So you now might know a little more as to why the name "runawayhorses" is a name I chose many years ago for my online name and logo name for my sites. But the real idea for the name came from a song by "Belinda Carlisle" titled "Runaway Horses", when I heard that song I knew I found the name I wanted to use for the rest of my life. Its the only name I will ever go by for anything online. That name is included on all my sites and is my trademark name, on all my sites you will see this at the bottom of each page:

Here is the video "Runaway Horses" by Belinda Carlisle, check it out and crank up your volume loud!. Smile

I think that question has been outlined for you here already, they both specialize at coding in different areas. If you're more interested in how a website looks then designing is for you, or if you are interested in the functionality aspects then development would be your choice of expertise, and if you want to know everything than learn both, they both are as you so brilliantly put it equally "more to knowing the codes and all".

Yes like runaway stated the examples have been laid out. Now if you want to know how to make a website run, well that is development. If you want to learn how to design a site that is design lol. Though like I stated as well most good designers will know development and most good developers will know design. You can take courses on both, honestly.
